Thermal energy helium atoms, which have a de Broglie wavelength of about one Angstrom, can be diffracted from man-made nanoscale diffration gratings. This project will measure diffraction of helium atoms from state-of-the-art, free-standing, transmission gratings. The goal is to characterize the quality of the gratings and to measure experimentally the resolution of a recently-completed atom interferometer that will employ these grating as its beam-splitting elements.
