The project consists of writing a report describing the design of apparatus to measure the torque (not force) between two dielectric plates in vacuum, which has recently been proposed theoretically. The apparatus is based on a torsion pendulum in vacuum, with STM-type precision motions. Part of the apparatus exists in the Spence lab.
