Classroom and Individual Study Tutorials
nanoHUB Tutorials
These tools, developed by our group, can be run online using a free nanoHUB account.
nanoHUB: PIMC Application
This is an online version of our current “pi” research code. The expert interface lets you directly edit the pimc.xml input file then run the simulations. Several example input files are included. See our PIMC wiki site for more information and tutorials.
nanoHUB: Spin Couple Quantum Dots
This nanoHUB tool, “Spin Coupled Quantum Dots,” is a rappturized version of our recent double quantum dot simulations (described in arXiv:0809.0038). You can perform the calculations yourself, right from your web browser. Vary the dot separation, confinenment strength, and dielectric, and see how they change the exchange coupling, interacting charge densities, and the correlation hole.

Java Applet Tutorials
The first of these is an applet from our group, and the others are things we have found on the web.
Applet: Path Integral Simulation of Bosons
We made this path integral Monte Carlo simulation of 16 bosons with mass m=1 in a 10x10x10 box. Every 4 seconds the screen updates with a snapshot of the configuration (there are thousands of Monte Carlo steps executed between frames). The boxes show the energy per particle and superfluid density. (Online applet, javadoc pages, download source.)

Applet: 2D Ising Model (at Peter Young's website)
This applet simulates a 2D Ising model on a 30x30 grid. This is the canonical example of a Monte Carlo study of phase transitions. Peter provides some descriptions, and references the original Java program by Bernd Nottelmann at http://planck.uni- muenster.de:8080/java/ising.html.
Applet: 1-D Haromonic Oscillator
This applet, by S. Haase and Lehrstuhl Nielaba at Uni Konstanz, performs 1-D simulations in a variety of potentials. You can control the temperature. There is a nice graphical feature that collects the histogram of the probability density. (online applet).
Applet: "dmcView" – Diffusion Monte Carlo for 1D Simple Harmonic Oscillator
dmcView is the senior project of Ian Terrell for physics at The College of William and Mary. It's a Diffusion Monte Carlo simulation of a single particle in a one dimensional simple harmonic oscillator, complete with a graphical user interface. Original code and the website design © 2004 Ian Terrell.
