Directions to the Department of Physics from Sky Harbor Airport
The airport has 3 passenger terminals (Terminals 2, 3 and 4). The university is located in Tempe, less than 15 minutes drive away
in a southeasterly direction, just across the Salt River, close to a small butte known as “A Mountain”, which cradles
the football stadium. The airport has all the usual facilities (Cabs, Shuttles and Car Hire). If you are taking the Shuttle (blue vans),
you need an East Valley Shuttle; Cabs are best hired on the North side of Terminals 3 or 4.
Car hire booths are available separately in each terminal; however, there has been a change in organization early in 2006. Now a
common set of shuttle buses take you to a car hire facility on the west side of the airport, near 24th Street and the I-10 freeway.
Thus you take one of these buses from the south side of Terminals 3 or 4. It may not be necessary to re-enter the airport to reach
your destination; however, the following directions assume that you are coming to the University from inside the airport itself. The
advisability of the other possibilities depends on the time of day. Ask for directions, and avoid the I-10 and 202 freeways at rush
hour if you are not familiar with the area.
Maps of the University and the location of the Department may help you
if you arrive by car. From the airport, take the East exit, following signs to Loop 202, East Valley Cities. After that, you have a
choice, either:
- After a mile or so, turn right (South) on Priest, over the Salt river. Then turn left (East) on University (which is 8th Street) and
drive until you hit the University, which is just beyond Mill Avenue.
- Keep going east, joining the 202 Freeway, passing A Mountain, and then turn right (South) onto Scottsdale/Rural Road, and
turn right again onto University.
After that it is simply a question of parking. The Department Map indicates the nearest visitor lots to the department, whereas the
University Map gives detailed directions to a lot on the south side of the campus.
